Don't fake it baby, lay the real thing on me

Artist - David Bowie
Song of the day - Moonage Daydream

My last concert before the apocalypse was luckily the punk rock art house
god himself, John Cameron Mitchell aka Hedwig and the Angry Inch aka THE rock
opera all others are measured by. And though I was losing my mind hearing the OG
sing his musical hits, it was his Bowie cover of today’s song that stuck with
me…. Also perhaps cuz he performed an uncomfortable yet still genius version of
it on Shrill. I always enjoyed the song but like a lot of great covers, you’re
forced to hear it with fresh ears and see it in a different light.

I couldn’t begin to deconstruct this wacked out tune at the height of Ziggy
Stardust fame, it’s simply that it makes me happy. Through the space invader,
ray gun and alligator imagery is plea to bring in it on, lay it on me, whatever
you got I’m ready for it and I want it. And there’s this weird vibe right now
especially in my ER that something’s coming it’s not quite here yet but we’re
in this strange eye of the hurricane where the shadows of what will hit is trickling
down but the storm is just a few miles off. And there’s a Ziggy Stardust part
of me that just wants to paint a lightning bolt on my face, put on a kimono onesie
and be like “no I’m the mama-papa coming for you!...also keep your mouth shut.”
So for all my fellow space invaders, this one’s for you.

I'm an alligator, I'm a mama-papa coming for you
I'm the space invader, I'll be a rock 'n' rollin' bitch for you
Keep your mouth shut, you're squawking like a pink monkey bird
And I'm busting up my brains for the words
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Don't fake it baby, lay the real thing on me
The church of man, love, is such a holy place to be
Make me baby, make me know you really care
Make me jump into the air
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Freak out, far out, in out

Peace on Earth, can it be? Years from now, perhaps we'll see

Artist- Bing Crosby and David Bowie
Song of the day- Drummer Boy / Peace on Earth

So I found through this awkward recorded small talk between two music legends, that I have something in common with David Bowie's son. Drummer Boy, at least when I was growing up, was my favorite Christmas song and my grandmother agreed with me. Pretty much we are exactly like Bing Crosby and David Bowie. One weird, one classy, one in to glam rock the other...well, classy, but both super fans of Christmas. So for all the mixing of generations, of songs, of cookies and quality time, this one's for you and for my grandma I miss just a little bit extra on Christmas.

Come they told me pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
A new-born king to see pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
Our finest gifts we bring pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum

David: Peace on Earth, can it be
Bing: Come they told me pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Years from now, perhaps we'll see
Bing: A new-born king to see pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: See the day of glory
Bing: Our finest gifts we bring pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: See the day, when men of good will
Bing: To lay before the king pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Live in peace, live in peace again
Bing: Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Peace on Earth,
Bing: So to honour him pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Can it be
Bing: When we come

David & Bing:
Every child must be made aware
Every child must be made to care
Care enough for his fellow man
To give all the love that he can

David: I pray my wish will come true
Bing: Little baby pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: For my child and your child too
Bing: I stood beside him there pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: He'll see the day of glory
Bing: I played my drum for him pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: See the day when men of good will
Bing: I played my best for him pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Live in peace, live in peace again
Bing: Rum-pum-pum-pum, rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Peace on Earth,
Bing: And he smiled at me pa-rum-pum-pum-pum
David: Can it be
Bing: Me and my drum
David & Bing: Can it be

He'd like to come and meet us But he thinks he'd blow our minds

Artist- David Bowie
Song of the day- Starman

When I was in Chicago I got the most fortunate opportunity for this avid glamrock fan, to see the only U.S. stop on the David Bowie museum exhibition. The only real way I can describe it is, mind blown. It made me want to go back to school and prepare a thesis on the art that is David Bowie....though I guess that is why there is an exhibit about it. And since I can't do it justice or even begin to delve into the crazy genius that is Bowie, I'll begin with today's song. As you turned a corner and this video begins blasting in your museum rented headphones you see the rise of a rockstar come to life. And also seeing this (and every) outfit up close I think I would only ever wear this jumpsuit if someone will just make it for me! One commentary pointed out that when he looks at the camera and points at "you" thousands of "weirdos" across the globe found their icon and realized they weren't alone. They could be whoever or whatever they wanted only imagination was the limit. So to all those thankful that the Starman came and met us and blew our minds, this one's for you.

And for an extra treat below, check out this early mime art piece called "The Mask" that is one of the most clever commentaries I have ever seen. And also never thought I'd say this about anyone...but boy can mime.

Didn't know what time it was and the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was layin' down some rock 'n' roll 'lotta soul,
he said

Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no D.J. that was hazy cosmic jive

[CHORUS]
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me:
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

I had to phone someone so I picked on you
Hey, that's far out so you heard him too!
Switch on the TV
we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window I can see his light

If we can sparkle he may land tonight
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright

[CHORUS (x2)]

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it And the clock waits so patiently on your song

Artist- David Bowie aka Ziggy Stardust
Song of the day- Rock n roll suicide

One of my friends was talking about another David Bowie song with me today and it got me thinking about one of my fav halloween costumes (minus the mullet and plus the face painted lightening bolt!) and how much I loved this concept album, especially this one song. I feel like this is always a good end of the night song after a long night out or a long hard week out or a short life as a martian glam rock prophet here to save the world, you know the usual. Wherever you are on the spectrum, at the end of the day it's always nice to know you're not alone. There's at least a Ziggy Stardust from Mars who's got your back...and if you don't believe me I'll break out the old costume to prove it.

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then the
cigarette
The wall-to-wall's calling, it lingers, then you forget
oh oh oh oh
You're a rock 'n' roll suicide
You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clock waits so patiently on your song
You walk past the cafe but you don't eat when you've lived too
long
oh oh oh oh
You're a rock 'n' roll suicide
Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road
But day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don't let the sun blast your shadow
Don't let the milk floats ride your mind
So natural-religiously unkind
Oh, no, love! you're not alone
You're watching yourself but you're too unfair
You got your head all tangled up, but if I could only make you
care
Oh, no, love! you're not alone
No matter what or who you've been
No matter where or when you've seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I've had my share, so I'll help you with the pain
You're not alone, just turn on with me
You're not alone, let's turn on and be
You're not alone, gimme your hands
You're wonderful, gimme your hands
You're wonderful, gimme your hands
