Artist- Bryan Wood
Song of the day- Empty Homily
Now perhaps it is because he is a dear friend of mine, but I am pretty positive I would be blown away and in love with his music regardless if I knew Mr. Wood or not. Every song he writes seems to have the super power of expressing so much of what is going on inside a person that is often difficult to articulate, having that special ability to grab a raw emotion and make you not only look right at it, but even experiences it first hand for the minutes the song plays. Today's song has been playing in my head lately and I wasn't sure why till I listened to it more in depth. It's about all these things we try to fill the wholes in our hearts with, that ache inside that leaves you yearning more from life, from yourself that you never feel complete. We fill it with all kinds of things good and bad, people, jobs, exercise, food, alcohol, religion, entertainment, everything we can find to fill that void and they even work for a while but the emptiness in the end it's still there lurking even if we don't realize it, it comes back eventually. And I think this song was playing in my head cuz I realized the 'it' came back. And maybe it sounds like i have my own issues, and well I do, but I'm pretty sure songs like this feel universal for a reason. I personally think we were created with this whole for a reason, it's what some call the god-shaped whole, there's a reason nothing else fits it. And I forget that sometimes or at least am determined try more tangible, easier, more instantly gratifying ways to fit it, but I haven't found one yet. Perhaps you disagree but even so, if you are feeling a little empty and can't seem to find the right fit, this one's for you.
Delila, beautiful like the devil seducing me
Or this idol that I"m bowing to
Oh how subtly you ruin me
oh I'm a sucker for your lie
oh You leave me empty every time
Darling, beautiful clinging tightly to your rosary
like my idol or your memory
I let religion get the best of me
oh I'm a sucker for your lie
Oh You leave me empty every time
You were my golden statue
You were my bright red sun
Blinded from all that was true
You were my only one
Oh I'm a sucker for your lie
Oh you leave me empty every time
Oh I'm a sucker for your lie
Oh you leave me empty every time

It could all be so simple But you'd rather make it hard Loving you is like a battle And we both end up with scars
Artist- Holly Miranda
Song of the day- Ex-factor
When I was in high school I knew I was of musical sound mind, not so much for my blasting of brintey spears while eating ice cream with my best friend and cruising down the 82nd st strip (though it was some of the best times and I can't help it if Spears is a musical icon) but for my love of this Lauren Hill album. That's right, I knew what I thought hip-hop was, or had no clue, but I listened to "The mis-education of lauren hill" non stop to the point of studying Hill's lyrics and clever worded observations but also how she delivered her words with passion for someone who hurts her so bad, and yet not as a victim but with total bad-assness. So when I stumbled on this white girl cover of one of my fav Hill songs I had a sentimental appreciation for it and then instant hatred for her fantastic soulful vocals. Alas, if you are in need of some 90s flashbacks, empowerment, or a musical rant that encompasses your emotion, this one's for you...
one day I do dream of bursting into song out of anger "care for me care for me said you'd be there for me..." it is my masochistic dream.
It could all be so simple
But you'd rather make it hard
Loving you is like a battle
And we both end up with scars
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will
Is this just a silly game
That forces you to act this way
Forces you to scream my name
Then pretend that you can't stay
Tell me, who I have to be
To get some reciprocity
No one loves you more than me
And no one ever will
Hook:
No matter how I think we grow
You always seem to let me know
It ain't workin'
It ain't workin'
And when I try to walk away
You'd hurt yourself to make me stay
This is crazy
This is crazy
I keep letting you back in
How can I explain myself
As painful as this thing has been
I just can't be with no one else
See I know what we got to do
You let go and I'll let go too
'Cause no one's hurt me more than you
And no one ever will
Repeat Hook
Care for me, care for me
I know you care for me
There for me, there for me
Said you'd be there for me
Cry for me, cry for me
You said you'd die for me
Give to me, give to me
Why won't you live for me

Let's go dancin' in the light We know where the music's playin' Let's go out and feel the night.
Artist- Neil Young
Song of the day- Harvest moon
Neil Young is part of the library of legends that I know exist, know I must love, will gasp and say things like "You don't know who Neil Young is?" but in truth I am simply a Neil poser and no nothing, if anyone would like to educate me. I know I'm supposed to like several songs of his but today's song is the one that catches my ear. It's the haunting, almost of key, almost heavenly vocals, over a landscape of music that makes me feel like I'm watching a sunset with my grandpa on the front porch in the woods...or what I assume that would feel like. It also has this observation, separation from reality feel. Like if I could soundtrack the moments of my life in situations where I feel like an outsider just observing whats going on and unable to connect to it, I'm pretty sure this is the song that plays. And if I'm being really honest, when I rediscovered this song today I realized what cemented my love for the song and at the same time sucked all the coolness away was it being in the way too summer blockbustery eat. pray. love. Damn you Ryan Murphy for being able to place music so well in movies and tv, your Glee powers will have to run out someday, but till then, hears to the tunes that catch our ears no matter how classic rock, mutton chops filled, or Juliet Roberts movies they might be in.
Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin'
We could dream this night away.
But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night.
Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon.
When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.
But now it's gettin' late
And the moon is climbin' high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin' in your eye.
Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite Albums back as your lying there drifting off to sleep...
Artist- Ben Gibbard / Postal Service
Song of the day- Brand New Colony
I seem to be currently having a serious problem of not being able to stop buying concert tickets. I made an entire iCal calendar in red devoted to the concerts I plan / want to see and well as the spring and summer months progress each month seems to be bleeding concerts. And after scoring the very hard to get / sold out in 60 seconds Death Cab for Cutie tickets, it seemed appropriate to post a song from the multi talented, multi band lead singer. This was never my favorite Postal Service song, but after hearing Gibbard play an acoustic concert I had a new appreciation for not only his songwriting in general but the longing he makes come alive especially in today's song. And I get that this is a fantastic love song about one person being everything for the one they love. but it also reminds me of this verse in 1Cor 9:22 of becoming everything to everyone to show God's love. To be able to take them away from the pain of this world to a "brand new colony" where everything will change. And one of the greatest things a preacher said to me once is that, that would be how I'd show people love. It was inspiring because as a people pleaser for decades I learned how to do it, but to really love people that way not for your own gain but totally selfless and not losing your own self in the process well it is a balance I struggle with daily and not sure if I ever get it quite right. Probably not. But every once in a while there are glimpses of that kind of love and when that happens I know it's something otherworldly. So here's to that otherworldly kind of love if you have it and if you're looking for it, this one's for you.
I'll be the grapes fermented,
Bottled and served with the table set in my finest suit
Like a perfect gentlemen
I'll be the fire escape that's bolted to the ancient brick
Where you will sit and contemplate your day
I'll be the waterwings that save you if you start drowning
In an open tab when your judgement's on the brink
I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite
Albums back as your lying there drifting off to sleep...
I'll be the platform shoes and undo what heredity's done to you...
You won't have to strain to look into my eyes
I'll be your winter coat buttoned and zippedstraight to the throat
With the collar up so you won't catch a cold
I want to take you far from the cynics int his town
And kiss you on the mouth
We'll cut out bodies free from the tethers of this scene,
Start a brand new colony
Where everything will change,
We'll give ourselves new names (identities erased)
The sun will hear the grounds
Under our bare feet in this brand new colony
Everything will change, oOo oOo...

I'm putting your patience to the test I'm putting your body on the line, for less
Artist- The Strokes
Song of the day Machu Picchu
Alas it's back to the grindstone and goodbye vacation. I think what encompasses my good time during break, my reluctance to get back to school, and just the right synth beats and rock'n'roll to get me through yet another 10 weeks of school is today's song from the new Strokes album. It has the right amount of Stroke rock with a shake your rump beat that just might get me through. Here's to another batch of mountains, take some advice from the Stokes and look for the ones you can climb!
I'm putting your patience to the test
I'm putting your body on the line, for less
And didn't you know there was a choice?
It's never yours but someone else's voice
Slippin' your body through the street
I'm sending your girlfriends to the night, for cheat
Wearing a jacket, play the meat
Sending a letter … so sweet
And now you've heard that
Weathers turn to grey
Life in the shade
A violent cloud
And that's on USA
... on the rise
... in the sky
I'm just trying' to find
A mountain I can climb
I'm putting your patience to the test
I'm putting your body on the line, for less
And didn't you know there was a choice?
And it's never yours and someone else's voice
And now you've seen that
… grey
Life in the shade
A violent cloud
And that's on US
Porn/Born on the rise
Circles in the skies

I'm just tryin' to find
A mountain I can climb
(Tell us
Can ... tell us
… is so jealous
… is so silent
… is always silent
Can … tell us
… is so jealous
… is so silent
… is always silent
Can … tell us
… is so jealous)
I didn't wanna love you, baby
I didn't wanna love you
And everybody saw me
And even if they knew me
Can anyone even love me?
Aww, right
Why are you waitin'?
Life turns to dust
And when it turns to rust
That's it … true
…
And why do you look surprised?
Ever since I'm in the skies
I'm just tryin' to find
A space for you and I

If you give it a minute it's wrong If you give it a minute it's gone
Artist- Lykke Li
Song of the day- Breaking it up
I have been on vacation from school and with sporadic Internet and late nights which also meant a vaca from the song of the day blog. But I had to return early for a special occasion of my dear friend Mo's day of birth. To the person who seems to be as and sometimes even more excited about my blog than I am and who actually at times remembers and listens to most excellent bands I suggest such as today's. So Mo here is to you on the day you were born, someone who could sing better and express with more excitement about how glad I am that you are born. So I hope you break it up and get your dance on today!
If you're going abroad I can't help you
If you're crossing the street I might be there
If you give it a minute it's wrong
If you give it a minute it's gone
If we're just waiting a second too long
Darling I'll leave and you won't come along
So give me the reason to stay
Give me the reason to wait
You know I don't look to get caught
'Cause darling we're here but my true love is not
Breaking it up, before it's on
Breaking it up, it's already gone
Breaking it up, I didn't mean to fraud
Breaking it up
I might be there
If you're going abroad I can't help you
If you're crossing the street I might be there
And I call you baby I will and I do
Persuade you in though I know that we're through
I let you think that I'm yours when I'm not
Keep you here though I'm ready to drop the last line
Breaking it up, before it's on
Breaking it up, it's already gone
Breaking it up, I didn't mean to fraud
Breaking it up
I might be there
If you're going abroad I can't help you

And it's only doubts that we're counting On fingers broken long ago I read with every broken heart we should become More adventurous
Artist- Rilo Kiley
Song of the day- More Adventurous
Two things will always hold a great deal of my heart and returning to one of them tomorrow, LA, feels like I'm also returning to my musical heart of this band. And as I begin to contemplate what to do next in my life, I look back on all my adventures so far and feel pretty old, but something inside keeps pushing me to more adventures to be more adventurous. That I've found so much on my journey already, I've found so many loves so many homes that get harder and harder to leave that I wonder what's still calling me ahead. But I've learned the not knowing is part of the adventure. The faith of it, the knowing that you hear a voice in the distance and you keep going towards it. The dream inside of you. It was put there for whatever reason and no matter what it is, a family, a career, a place, a person, an idea, a feeling, a something you have no words for it's there for a reason even if you ignore it, think you are doing what's close to it, dreams are apart of you, and the adventures you take towards them shape who you are and are "becoming" as a professor of mine would say. So here's to riding that wave of adventure and seeing where it takes you.
And it's only doubts that we're counting
On fingers broken long ago
I read with every broken heart we should become
More adventurous
And if you banish me from your profits
And if I get banished from the kingdom up above
I'd sacrifice money and heaven all for love
Let me be loved, let me be loved
And if my brain quits, well I guess then that's just it
And if my hands stop working you can call me lazy
And if I get pregnant, I guess I'll just have the baby
Let it be loved, let me be loved
I've been trying to nod my head, but it's like I've got a broken neck
Wanting to say I will as my last testament
For me to be saved and you to be brave
We don't have to walk down that aisle
'Cause if marriage ain't enough
Well at least we'll be loved
I felt the wind on my cheek coming down from the east
And thought about how we are all as numerous as leaves on trees
And maybe ours is the cause of all mankind
Give love to make more, try to stay alive
I've been trying to nod my head, but it's like I've got a broken neck
Wanting to say I will as my last testament
For you to be saved and me to be brave
We don't have to walk down that aisle
'Cause if marriage ain't enough
