My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night

Artist- Cast of Anchorman
Song of the day- afternoon delight

I wanted to finish covers week on a cheery note. Sometimes you just need a mid-day pick me up with definitely no sub-context in its innocent lyrics at all. Plus one of the best things in life is impromptu sing alongs for no good reason! Not to mention Anchorman is hilarious and I can't seem to stop calling things "a delight". It's really surprising just how many things I find delightful! So if you aren't having a delightful day, I challenge you to just start singing aloud till you do, cuz that in itself is a delight. See I can't stop saying it.

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart Without saying a word you can light up the dark

Artist- Alison Krauss
Song of the day- when you say nothing at all

I had pretty bad insomnia growing up and I remember spending my sleepless nights switching channels between MTV and VHI because it was the only time they actually played music videos. But over one summer Marilyn Manson's "sweet dreams" (the cover you will NOT be hearing) was in heavy rotation and only increased my wanting to not sleep ever. So (though being in my strong anti-country phase) I reluctantly switched it to CMT where I could at least trust the non terrifying uncomplicated singing about beer and pickup trucks. Instead one night at 4am I stumbled upon the greatest vocals I've ever heard to this day. I think I might physically challenge anyone who says that Alison Krauss does not have the ability to literally pierce your soul. She could even sing about beer and pickup trucks and I'd probably have the exact same reaction. Luckily she does a simple cover and blows it out of the water. It makes me suddenly love love and love life and want to frolic in summer dresses, watch chick flicks, pick out china patterns and maybe even fall asleep...yeah it's that good.

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you don’t say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near, you drown out the crowd
Old mr. webster could never define
What’s being said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There’s a truth in your eyes sayin’ you’ll never leave me
The touch of your hand says you’ll catch me if ever I fall
You say it best when you say nothing at all

the things you could do, you won't but you might the potential you'll be, that you'll never see the promises you'll only make

Artist- Metric
Song of the day- Between the bars

Today's cover introduces you to what is my never ending love for Elliott Smith. I could write books on his guitar playing, lyrical talent, and tormented soul. And I know when I come across a good cover when it makes me notice things about a song I never had in the original. Besides being able to pull off indoor sunglasses (I shall fulfill this dream one day), there's something about Emily Haines voice that enhances Smith's words. Besides that this song reminds me why I like going drinking with people, minus the crazy hijinks, dancing, drag queens, chair bowling, and obvious downsides that can occur...people open up more. And yeah it's sad that we need alcohol to do so and I've had countless heart to hearts without it but my most favorite thing in life is knowing people, the good, the bad, the funny, the ugly, the sad, the frustrated, the beautiful, the whole person. I love how we are all so complex that we might never fully know each other and I find it kind of sad. And sadder when you see so much amazingness in people that they can't see in themselves. If I had a superpower I'd want it to be that, to take away whatever stops people from believing in themselves, that stops them from seeing every little amazing detail God put inside them specifically to make the world a better place. Cuz you do. Even if you don't don't believe it, I do. Cuz I've experienced it first hand.

drink up, baby, stay up all night
the things you could do, you won't but you might
the potential you'll be, that you'll never see
the promises you'll only make

drink up with me now and forget all about the pressure of days
do what I say and I'll make you okay and drive them away
the images stuck in your head

people you've been before that you don't want around anymore
that push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars where I'm seeing you
there with your hands in the air, waiting to finally be caught

drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
keep you apart deep in my heart separate from the rest
where I like you the best and keep the things you forgot

the people you've been before that you don't want around anymore
that push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

It's just emotion taking me over

Artist- Destiny's Child
Song of the day- Emotion

That's right it's turned into cover's week here at ripchord just cuz I feel like it. And i've decided to dive into the billboard toppers from 10yrs ago for today's cover cuz a) three part harmonies make any song better b) I like anyone who cover's the BeeGees c) though i am a "single lady wuhuho" I'm also a "woman who's independent" who from time to time wants to "throw my hands up like this." And no one quite did that like Destiny's Child. Plus Emotion is an excellent song, and for someone who keeps most of her own inside, I appreciate a song that will express it for me. And though this video is mostly cheezy I like how it tells the story of each person going through their own drama at the exact same time just like real life. I think when we're caught up in our own emotions we tend to forget how everyone around us is dealing with their own issues too and when we help each other out despite all the drama of life, that's when it becomes one story. So if you've got emotions taking you over (and unless you're dead inside you probably do) this one's for you

It's over and done,
But the heartache lives on inside (yeah yeah)
And who is the one you´re clinging to,
Instead of me tonight.
BRIDGE
And where are you now,
Now that I need you,
Tears on my pillow,
Whereever you go go,
I'll cry me a river
That´s leads to your ocean
You´ll never see me fall apart
CHORUS
In the words of a broken heart
It´s just emotion that's taking me over,
Caught up in sorrow, lost in the song,
But if you don´t come back,
Come home to me darling,
You'll know there´s nobody
Left in this world to hold me tight,
There´s nobody left in this world to kiss goodnight,
Goodnight (4)
I´m there, at your side,
A part of all the things you are,
But you have a part of someone else,
You gotta go find your shining star.
Goodnight (3)

Ra Ra-ah-ah-ah Roma Roma-ma GaGa Oh la-la

Artist- Lissie
Song of the day- Bad Romance

Since I'm on a cover song role this week (and will now not be able to think of any more good ones having said this) here's one I sang throughout class today. Lady Gaga makes for great sing alongs in case you were wondering, and Lissie adds a bit of the hard rock edge that makes the hipster in me happy. So whether you're a pop diva, tight pants and cardigan wearing indie rocker, country fool, or all of the above, get this group clapping chorus down and sing it with me...from the top!

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Caught in a bad romance

And you know that I need you

Can we climb this mountain I don't know Higher now than ever before I know we can make it if we take it slow

Artist- The Noisettes
Song of the day- When you were young

As much as I love giving people songs, receiving them from people who tend to understand me better than I do myself is a real treat! My dear friend Kristina has a true gift of saying exactly what I need to hear at that moment and is one of the best at finding me songs that smack me in the face. Here's one she sent me a while ago that seems to always be a nice reminder of why I should keep climbing mountains when all I really want to do is have a good ol' pity party for myself and / or escape back to easier times. Plus if you haven't noticed I'm a sucker for a good cover song. So if you need a reason to keep climbing today, dance on up to this!

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now ... here he comes!

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young

Can we climb this mountain
I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let's take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
(He talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined when)
When you were young

I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know

Love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Artist- Jeff Buckley
Song of the day- Hallelujah

Today's song is perhaps one of the most overly covered songs thus deciding between my two favorite male vocalists of all time; Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley took a while but I'm sure I shall dwell on both in later blogs. I liked Buckley's solo guitar interpertation cuz i feel like it captures a lot of what this song says. I go back to these beautiful lyrics from the masterful Leanord Cohen and grasp something different each time. I've always loved his biblical imagry of the rise and fall and fall and rise of the David but after diving into the story more today it also brought out the multilayered use of the word hallelujah and, how to me, the most beautiful way this worshipful word can ever be sung is from this place of utter brokenness that I think Buckley just oozes out of him. It's the kind of worship David was writing in Psalm 51
"Going through the motions doesn't please you, a flawless performance is nothing to you. I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don't for a moment escape God's notice."

After reading that passage this song took on a whole new meaning. And maybe I just got too goddy for you and went way over your head of caring. But if you're in a broken place today know its a song worth singing and someone can't wait to listen.

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Try waking up with the sun Forget the past it is done Think of the man that you used to be He is less than the one you’ve become

Artist- The Parson Red Heads
Song of the day- Time is running out

So the weekends are less enjoyable for me this summer and more a sign of impending doom of only having a few days left to study for tests. But instead of freaking out about running out of time, I'm choosing to focus on the positivity the Parson Red Heads always bring to their music. To not look back at your past of the things you haven't learned yet or tests failed (this is totally an analogy and so not the literal interpertation of my grade point average, eh) but to live every moment out focusing on all the good you have and all the good you can do in the short time we have. It reminds me of this John Wesley quote I found last week:
"Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as you ever can."

live out the goodness my friends. happy sunday

These dear Parsons will be in chicago at Schubas next Saturday and if you're near by you should really witness their sweet sweet goodness first hand. I'm getting giddy just thinking about it!

Give all the things that you have
Finish the things you began
All of the time that we spend giving up
Could be spent on the things that we have
Try waking up with the sun
Forget the past it is done
Think of the man that you used to be
He is less than the one you’ve become
Time is running time is running out
Time is running time is running out
Give all the things that you have
Finish the love you began
All of the time that we spend giving up
Could be spent on the things that we have
Try waking up with the sun
Forget the past it is done
Think of the man that you used to be
He is less than the one you’ve become
Time is running time is running out
Time is running time is running out

These dreams go on when I close my eyes. Every second of the night, I live another life.

Artist- Heart
Song of the day- These Dreams

So I'm finally back in the pop culture main stream after seeing "Inception" and have jumped on the bandwagon of my mind being blown and confused by it. But I still find it hard to top this stellar dream sequence music video with it's 80's shoulder pads and dramatic use of fog, now that really blows my mind. If I start to deconstruct the movie or this song I might start to question my own reality. But as someone who lives inside her head 90% of the time, dreaming can be quite the safe haven, and sometimes a self made prison from experiencing all that real life has to offer. So here's to sweet dreamers and day dreamers may your mind be good to you and may you have the courage to live out all your dreams....except the scary or weird ones. Also if this IS all my dream (spoiler alert) I apologize for the constant rain. My tiny bladder is even annoying on a subconscious level.

Spare a little candle, save some light for me.
Figures up ahead moving in the trees.
White skin in linen, perfume on my wrist,
And the full moon that hangs over these dreams in the mist.

Darkness on the edge, Shadows where I stand
I search for the time on a watch with no hands,
I want to see you clearly, Come closer than this
But all I remember are the dreams in the mist

CHORUS
These dreams go on when I close my eyes.
Every second of the night, I live another life.
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside,
Every moment I'm awake, the further I'm away.

Is it cloak and dagger, could it be Spring or Fall?
I Walk without a cut through a stained-glass wall.
Weaker in my eyesight, a candle in my grip,
And words that have no form are falling from my lips.

CHORUS
These dreams go on when I close my eyes.
Every second of the night, I live another life.
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside,
Every moment I'm awake, the further I'm away.

BRIDGE
There's something out there I can't resist.
I need to hide away from the pain.
There's something out there I can't resist.

The sweetest song is silence that I've ever heard.
Funny how your feet in dreams never touch the Earth.
In a wood full of princes, freedom is a kiss.
But the Prince hides his face from dreams in the mist.

CHORUS
These dreams go on when I close my eyes.
Every second of the night, I live another life.
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside,
Every moment I'm awake, the further I'm away.

CHORUS
These dreams go on when I close my eyes.
Every second of the night, I live another life.
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside,
Every moment I'm awake, the further I'm away.

How have you gotten by so far Without a head and no visible scar? No one knowin' who you really are They can't see

Artist- The Raconteurs
Song of the day- old enough

Of all Jack White's brilliant musical endeavours, The Raconteurs are my favorite. Especially when they lean towards the blue grassy-ness that is oh so dear to my heart. Not to mention I want to steal Brendan Benson and his tiny little guitar. But today's song also reminds me a lot about growing up and how clueless and self conscious I was till I let myself be okay with the weird, phobic, baby hands, people pleasing, artsy quack that god made me to be. Instead of spending the majority of my time pretending I knew everything and was totally "normal". Being okay in your own skin is the most adult, freeing thing we can do. And sure it might only fully happen 20% of the time, but today give your perfectionist, secretly gray haired, man feet, talking to yourself, throat smacking tics, high pitched voice, easily distracted, broad shoulders, and energy drink addicted self a pat on the back. It's what makes you you, and you're pretty awesome.

You look pretty in your fancy dress
But I detect unhappiness
You never speak so I have to guess
You're not free.

There, maybe when you're old enough
You'll realize that you're not so tough
And some days the seas get rough
And you'll see

You're too young to have it figured out
You think you know what you're talking about
You think it all will work itself out
But we'll see

When I was young I thought I knew
You probably think you know too
Do you? Well do you?
I was naive just like you I thought
I knew exactly what I wanted to do
Well, what's you gonna do?
What a fool

And how have you gotten by so far
Without a head and no visible scar?
No one knowin' who you really are
They can't see

What's you gonna do (what's you gonna do)
What's you gonna do now
What's you gonna do (what's you gonna do)
What's you gonna do now
What's you gonna do (what's you gonna do)
What's you gonna do now
What's you gonna do (what's you gonna do)
What's you gonna do now
What's you gonna do now

The only way you'll ever learn a thing
Is to admit that you know absolutely nothing
Oh nothing
Think about this carefully
You might not get another chance to speak freely
Oh freely

Maybe when you're old enough
Maybe when you're old enough
Maybe when you're old enough
You're not free
You're not free

Mix a little bit a ah, ah With a little bit a ah, ah

Artist- Jenny Owens Young
Song of the day- Hot in Herre

It's been so hot in chicago today, I've had ice cream twice!...well that actually might have nothing to do with the weather. On top of that, today's song seems extra appropriate after having lab on what my sister makes fun of me for calling "man and lady parts." I've learned things I can't forget even if I wanted to. On the bright side, here's a most excellent cover song directed by my most excellent bearded LA friend Josh Forbes. That's right I name dropped I've lived in LA, it's required. So if you're sweating it out, slutting it up, or just enjoy dancing with polar bears, this song is for you.

I was like, good gracious ass is bodacious
Uh, flirtatcious, tryin to show patience
Lookin for the right time to shoot my steam (you know)
Waitin for the right time to flash them keys
Then um I'm leavin, please believin
Oh, Me and the rest of my heathens
Check it, got it locked at the top of the four seasons
Penthouse, roof top, birds are feedin
No deceivin, nothin up my sleeve and, no teasin
I need you to get up up on the dance floor
Give that man what he askin for (oh)
Cuz I feel like bustin loose and I feel like touchin you (ah, ah)
And cant nobody stop the juice so baby tell me whats the use

[Chorus x2]
(I said)
Its gettin hot in here (so hot)
So take off all your clothes

[woman's voice]
I am gettin So hot, I wanna take my clothes off

Oh

Let it hang all out

Why you at the bar if you aint poppin the bottles
What good is all the fame if you aint fuckin the models
I see you drivin, sportscar, aint hittin the throttle
And I be down, and do a hundred, top down and goggles
Get off the freeway, exit 106 and parked it
Ash tray, think its time to spark it,
Gucci collar for dollar, got out and walked it
I spit game cuz baby I cant talk it
Warm, sweatin its hot up in this joint
VOKAL tanktop, on at this point
Your with a winner so baby you cant loose
I got secrets cant leave Cancun
So take it off like your home alone
You know dance in front your mirror while your on the phone
Checkin your reflection and tellin your best friend,
like "girl I think my butt gettin big"

[ChorusX2]

(nelly let it hang all out)
Mix a little bit a ah, ah
With a little bit a ah, ah
(nelly let it just fall out)
Give a little bit a ah, ah
With a little bit a ah, ah
(nelly let it hang all out)
With a little bit a ah, ah
And a sprinkle a that ah, ah
(nelly let it just fall out)
I like it when ya ah, ah
Girl, Baby make it ah, ah

Stop pacin, time wastin
I gotta a friend with a fold in the basement (What?)
I'm just kiddin like Jason (Oh)
Unless you gon' do it
Extra, extra eh, spread the news (check it)
Nelly took a trip from the Lou to Neptunes
Came back with somethin thicker than fittin in sasoons
Say she like to think about cuttin in restrooms

[Chorus x4]

(nelly let it hang all out)
Mix a little bit of ah, ah
With a little bit of ah, ah
(nelly let it just fall all out)
Give a little bit of ah, ah
With a little bit of ah, ah
(nelly let it hang all out)
With a little bit of ah, ah
And a sprinkle of that ah, ah
(nelly let it just fall allout)
I like it when ya ah, ah
Girl, Baby make it ah, ah
Oh

And I've got all the world to lose But I just want to hold on to the Easy silence that you make for me

Artist- Dixie Chicks
Song of the day- Easy silence

The world's been feeling a little crazy and intense lately, but sometimes it's nice to just shut your eyes through the madness and take a moment to realize what's important still, how you're blessed despite it all, how silence can be peaceful and not lonely when you remember why you're here, what you're meant for and how you're loved. So if you've been feeling a little stumbly and like the world's been blaring in your direction, I give you permission to take a moment and enjoy the quiet.

When the calls and conversations
Accidents and accusations
Messages and misperceptions
Paralyze my mind

Busses, cars, and airplanes leaving
Burning fumes of gasoline
And everyone is running
And I come to find a refuge in the

Easy silence that you make for me
It's okay when there's nothing more to say to me
And the peaceful quiet you create for me
And the way you keep the world at bay for me
The way you keep the world at bay

Monkeys on the barricades
Are warning us to back away
They form commissions trying to find
The next one they can crucify

And anger plays on every station
Answers only make more questions
I need something to believe in
Breathe in sanctuary in the

Easy silence that you make for me
It's okay when there's nothing more to say to me
And the peaceful quiet you create for me
And the way you keep the world at bay for me
The way you keep the world at bay

Children lose their youth too soon
Watching war made us immune
And I've got all the world to lose
But I just want to hold on to the

Easy silence that you make for me
It's okay when there's nothing more to say to me
And the peaceful quiet you create for me
And the way you keep the world at bay for me

The easy silence that you make for me
It's okay when there's nothing more to say to me
And the peaceful quiet you create for me
And the way you keep the world at bay for me
The way you keep the world at bay for me
The way you keep the world at bay

10 10 10 10 for everything everything everything everything

Artist- Violent Femmes
Song of the day- Kiss off

After spending days and days studying antidepressants, antimanics, antiphyschotics, and antianxiety drugs for an intense midterm, this song is feeling pretty appropriate right now. Not that I'm condoning medication abuse because that's bad news kids and pretty messy, fyi. But if your seeing a little anxiousness bottling up inside that just might be about to explode, this song is for you!

I need someone a person to talk to
someone who'd care to love
could it be you could it be you
situation gets rough then I start to panic
it's not enough it's just a habit
hey kid you're sick well darling this is it
you can all just kiss off into the air
behind my back I can see them stare
they'll hurt me bad but I won't mind
they'll hurt me bad they do it all the time
yeah yeah they do it all the time
yeah yeah they do it all the time
yeah yeah they do it all the time
yeah yeah they do it all the time
I hope you know this will go down
on your permanent record
oh yeah well don't get so distressed
did I happen to mention that I'm impressed
I take one one one cause you left me and
two two two for my family and
3 3 3 for my heartache and
4 4 4 for my headaches and
5 5 5 for my loneliness and
6 6 6 for my sorrow and
7 7 for no tomorrow and

yeah yeah, yeah they do it all the time
do it all the time
do it all the time
do it all the time time time
yeah yeah they do it all the time

When the rain is blowing in your face And the whole world is on your case I could offer you a warm embrace

Artist- Adele
Song of the day- Make you feel my love

So I haven't been sleeping very well lately, some would argue at all, cuz my mind really likes to never turn off when it's stressed out. And I think this video might some up a usual night for me, minus the sounding like Adele with her drop dead gorgeous voice and more the talking to myself and looking at the clock and my phone every 5 minutes. So if you're having trouble resting your head like me, this song is for you. Maybe Adele can sing us to sleep tonight.

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven’t made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I’ve known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue
I’d go crawling down the avenue
There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rollin’ sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain’t seen nothing like me yet

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

When food is gone you are my daily meal When friends are gone I know my savior's love is real

Artist- Florence + The Machine
Song of the day- You've got the love

I haven't been this fascinated by a newish artist in a while. After my all encompassing wise friend Sarah sent me one of her songs I was hooked. The majority of her videos give an absurd weird feeling in the pit of my stomach (similar to how I feel when watching "Legend" with it's creepy ass fairies and Tom Cruise with long hairness) though I can't help but dance. This is one of her more tame numbers which kinda struck home for me. Though some of my conservative counterparts might disagree, when I find myself thinking of what heaven could possibly be like, what comes to mind is a nonstop love fest with everyone full of love for God and each other, tons of crazy characters, every walk of life present, and lots of glitter. Apparently what I'm thinking of looks a lot like Studio 54 minus the STDs and cocaine...who knew? But I think Sunday's are a great time to love it up, so let the love fest begin! happy sunday

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need To see me through

Sometimes it seems that the going is just too rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now and then it seems that life is just too much
But you've got the love I need to see me through

When food is gone you are my daily meal
When friends are gone I know my savior's love is real
You Know it's real

You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love

Time after time I think "Oh Lord what's the use?"
Time after time I think it's just no good
Sooner or later in life, the things you love you lose
But you got the love I need to see me through

You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love

You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying "Lord I just don't care"
But you've got the love I need to see me through

I believe This is heaven to no one else but me

Artist- Sarah Mclachlan
Song- Elsewhere

So it may be SHOCKING to discover that in my adolescents I saw myself as somewhat of an artsy nerd, believing my grandmother when she said I could draw things that I guarantee didn't look like horses, taking pictures of melting candles, writing bad poetry, half learning instruments, and going to the movies by myself every day after school. What can I say, I was pretty cool. And the anthem to my teenage misfit-ness was the album "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" by Sarah Mclachlan who I was positive was the only person who could articulate where I was coming from. Getting to finally see her live in concert Saturday is bringing some closure to the 16yr old inside me who even 11 years ago wondered why Paula Cole dressed like a Native American. So here's to the other misfits out there, today's song is for you.

I love the time and in between
The calm inside me
In the space where I can breathe
I believe there is a
Distance I have wandered
To touch upon the years of
Reaching out and reaching in
Holding out holding in

I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I’ll defend it as long as I can be
Left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand

I know this love is passing time
Passing through like liquid
I am drunk in my desire...
But I love the way you smile at me
I love the way your hands reach out and hold me near...
I believe...

I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I’ll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand

Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free
The mold that clings like desperation
Mother can’t you see I’ve got
To live my life the way I feel is right for me
Might not be right for you but it’s right for me...
I believe...

I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I’ll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand it

I would like to linger here in silence
If I choose to
Would you understand it
Would you try to understand...

My eyes shall see light again And my heart shall bleed right again

Artist- Mumford and Sons
Song of the day- The Banjolin Song

Today's song is credited to my dearly musically inclined roommate who promises to keep me on top of the music game while my ears might still be stuck two years back in Silverlake, Ca. Not only does this band fit just about all my favorite instruments on one tiny porch whilst wearing trending autumn attire, but they fill my top musical quota of singing slightly depressing lyrics with an upiddy melody. Plus it's always a nice reminder to know that the heart breaks only to be fixed again and that the valley of badness comes only until it's time to walk back up that mountain of hope. If you need music to start climbing, today's song is for you.

She stole my heart and made me sing
She tore me limb from limb
I did not think that I could love
Or be loved that way again

How glad I was to be myself
And use my heart once more
How glad I was to be a man
That loved that girl that I adore

Well my eyes shall see light again
And my heart shall bleed right again

'Cause we've gotta come up

Artist- The Swell Season
Song of the day- low rising

So instead of sitting outdoors with a nice picnic, bottle of wine, friends, and watching this lovely pair of musicians, I'm currently at the library attempting to study while still not recovering from being punched in the face by nursing school. We all have our little emotional rain clouds sometimes and if you can't seem to escape the rain today, this one's for you. There's sunshine ahead, and you can always dance the rain till it comes.

I wanna sit you down and talk
I wanna pull back the veils
And find out what it is I´ve done wrong
I wanna tear these curtains down
I want you to meet me somewhere
Tonight in this old tourist town
And we´ll go

Low rising
´Cause we´ve gotta come up
We´ve gotta come up
Low rising
´Cause I fear we´ve had enough
Low rising
´Cause there´s no further for us to fall
Low rising
Oh for the love of you

I wanna take you to the rock
I wanna jump right in
And see what that big ocean´s got
I wanna turn this thing around
I wanna drink with you
All night till we both fall down
Till we go

Low rising
´Cause we´ve gotta come up
We´ve gotta come up
Low rising
´Cause there´s no further for us to fall
Low rising
And I fear we´ve had enough
Low rising
Oh for the love of you

Low rising
´Cause we´ve gotta come up
We´ve gotta come up
Low rising
And I fear we´ve had enough
Low rising
´Cause there´s no further for us to fall
Low Rising
Oh for the love of you

For the love of you

Low rising low rising

I wanna sit you down and talk

I wanna sit you down and talk about it now

When you sleep you count the stars

Artist- Johnathan Rice
Song of the day- I wouldn't miss it for the world

Sometimes you just have one of those days that you can't quite get your head above water. Sometimes you just have one of those days that never seem to end even when you were done with it before it started. Sometimes you just have one of those days where you want the boy of your dreams to sing you a song. Here's to you if you're having one of those days or are in need of a boy to sing to you...but he's just out on loan. Don't go falling in love with him or I might have to beat you up, and I'm a hair puller so look out.

So you've loved me now
For half a year
Despite the distance and the fear
Of a falling sky and a gathering storm
That'll blow me back where I came from

That ain't the way I see you baby
I know you're not that kind of girl
When you die I will come looking for you
I wouldn't miss it for the world

An opportunist waiting for a chance
To fuck you over leave you flat
Take off your dress and go straight to the press
To make time on the evening news

Is that the way you see me baby
I know you're not that kind of girl
When you die I will come looking for you
I wouldn't miss it for the world

That murderer who shares your cell
Well his sentence don't have to be yours as well
Cause when you sleep you count the stars
He's making enemies across the bars

That ain't the way I see you baby
I know you're not that kind of girl
When you die I will come looking for you
I wouldn't miss it for the world

The more I see, I understand but sometimes I still need you

Artist- The XX
Song of the day- Heart Skipped a beat

So I've been cramming for a test on so many things still over my head including heart sounds. And you know you've been studying too long when you start deconstrucing rhythm in songs to see if they sound similar to the human body. Nerd alert! But today's song comes from my intense frustration with any abnormal thrills or skips the heart makes and is dedicated to my study group and anyone else out there getting by with the help of a grand group of people....sometimes I still need you!

Please don't say we're done
When I'm not finished
I could give you so much
Make you feel, like never before
Welcome, they said welcome to the floor

It's been a while
And you've found someone better
But I've been waiting too long to give this up
The more I see, I understand
But sometimes, I still need you

Sometimes, I still need you

I was struggling to get in
Left waiting outside your door
I was sure
You'd give me more

No need to come to me
When I can make it all the way to you
You made it clear
You weren't near
Near enough for me

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard if before

Human kindness is overflowing

Artist- Bette Midler
Song of the day- I think it's going to rain today

I was staring out the library window earlier as I tried to get my brain to understand cardiomyopathy and was looking at all the grey in the sky. This song immediately popped into my brain instead of medical jargon and refused to go away. So I decided to look it up and get more depressed by watching clips from the movie "beaches"only to discover that Bette Midler sings this song as Barbara Hershey sits in a library reading about her new found disease that I never bothered to pay attention to before....cardiomyopathy. This freaked me out so much that I took it as a sign that this MUST be today's song (and not perhaps the obvious sign that I should be studying and not on youtube). So thanks "beaches" for making me never forget cardiomyopathy or how big Bette Midler's red hair was in the 80s. Though I am still perplexed that a song whose chorus is "human kindness is overflowing" can still be SO depressing?! Either way, here's to serendipitous moments that give you goosebumps and lead you down the right path.

Broken windows and empty hallways,
a pale dead moon in a sky streaked with grey.
Human kindness is overflowing,
and I think it's gonna rain today.

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles,
the frozen smiles to chase love away.
Human kindness is overflowing,
and I think it's gonna rain today.

Lonely, lonely.
Tin can at my feet,
I think I'll kick it down the street.
That's the way to treat a friend.

Bright before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
and I think it's gonna rain today.

Lonely, so lonely.
Tin can at my feet,
I think I'll kick it down the street.
That's the way to treat a friend.

Bright before me the signs implore me:
Help the needy and show them the way.
Human kindness is overflowing,
and I think it's gonna rain today.

To be alone with me you went up on the tree

Artist- Sufjan Stevens
Song of the Day- To be alone with you

So I've decided my new calling in life should be to somehow find a way to make decent recordings of what I think are really great songs, after spending hours (hours I should've been studying) trying to find this gem of a song in a decent recording or at least not a cheezy slide show. Though it did reclaim my love for Sufjan Stevens and my desire to wear wings everywhere I go like he does in worse quality videos. I think if one song could encompus the beautiful simplicity of my beliefs it's today's song. I find I can complicate life pretty easily and when I do, if I just come back to this simple truth of a love so vast and so intimate at the same time, it puts things back into perspective. Maybe that doesn't make any sense, but if it does, this song is for you. Happy sunday everybody.

I'd swim across Lake Michigan
I'd sell my shoes
I'd give my body to be back again
In the rest of the room
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you
To be alone with you

You gave your body to the lonely
They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave your ghost
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
To be alone with me
You went up on the tree

To be alone with me
You went up on the tree

I've never known a man who loves me

You're pushing and pulling me down to you

Artist- Paramore
Song of the Day- Caught Myself

I'm fully aware of the flack I will get for today's video, but in my defense there is no good footage of the band performing one of my most favorite songs of their's. And also the girlie teenage girl inside of me needed to celebrate seeing "Eclipse" today in some form. But really, who can't relate to being seduced by something / someone that we know is not good for us i.e. sexy vampires. Who hasn't been there? Today's song is for you...and team edward, embrace the cheese!

I'm reminded of your grace as it dances it's way down

Artist- Bryan Wood
Song of the Day- Seasonal Thing

Have you ever tried to make that list of songs you just couldn't live without hearing? Though mine is most probably quite long, what ranks high up there is today's song, which is why I forced my dear friend to come visit me back in Texas where I could record it and have it with me forever. This song has been sung to me at my most physical and emotional low points and always seems to bring that unexplainable peace no matter where I'm at. I hope you feel a little bit of that god given sweetness only the "precious" Bryan Wood can bring.

You call it chivalry Never pull a punch for free

Artist- Broken Bells
Song of the Day- The ghost inside

So I'm currently obsessed with the band Broken Bells and the majority of my friends are obsessed with "Mad Men" (though minus the excellent style I find it depressing on several levels). Luckily today's video might just be a nice medium for everyone, plus who doesn't like outer space and hot robots? Though when I actually listened past the undeniably catchy beats I realized the lyrics were quite depressing. Minus the probable hint of abusive relationships, it also depicts how people are so willing to give up who they are to get what they think they want, whether its something like fame or even something more genuine, like love. I have this pair of boxing gloves in my room that my friend gave me once after a long conversation we had about my reluctance to fight back when the world keeps on beating me down. And he was right, no matter how much I want to be loved or accepted by this silly little world, losing what you stand for, who you are, can leave you beat up with no arms and legs...ok that metaphor might not make sense till after you see the video. But if something or someone is keeping you down today feel free to come borrow one of my gloves!

Up to my knees now, do I wait? Do I dive? The sea has seen my like before though it’s my first And perhaps last time

Artist- Frightened Rabbit
Song of the day- Swim until you can't see land

So my excitement for starting to swim laps today with my big hearted friend Suzanne made me think of this song and pretty much the constant analogy that has followed me through the years of "diving in." A few weeks ago I heard this quote that went something like, "The path to your greatest accomplishment is often through your greatest fear" and I think it stuck with me cuz I couldn't get over how true that was. That so often the things we're afraid of and spend so much time avoiding, often lead us to what we were always meant to do, what could be our proudest moment. So whatever is causing you to not dive in today I say screw it and jump on into the ice cold water. You might fail, you might drown, but not matter what you'll make a splash and just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.

Oh you think I'm in control

Artist- Ida Maria
Song of the Day- Oh my god

So I used to like Tuesdays, with it's delightful television and...well I'm sure there were other reasons, BUT this summer they have become the bane of my existence. Over 8 hours of non stop schooling in what I still consider a foreign language makes me feel like I'm losing my mind most of the time. If you're having one of those 'wanna crawl outta your skin days' from frustration, over work, little bathroom breaks, recovery from the holiday, or just need a reason to freak out and dance around....join me as this song will be in constant rotation in my head today.

Don't be sad I know you will, don't give up until true love will find you in the end

Artist- Mates of State
Song of the Day- True love will find you in the end

There's been three things I've been trying to get my hands on which all accumulated together today: knowledge of my antipsychotic drugs in pharm class, the new Mates of State album, and the haunting documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" about what some call a musical genius struggling with manic depression. Mates of State covers one of his most innocent / heart breaking songs in a such a joyous way only this gosh darn adorable duo could do. And maybe i guess it reminded me that i hope on my best days as a nurse or just a human being i could bring out the same kind of joy from brokenness. And whether you're the broken or the joy today, this is the song for you.

She's got the river down which I sold her

Artist- Aimee Mann
Song of the Day- 4th of July

Almost more than looking forward to celebrating freedom, fireworks, and the American way, I especially love today because it gives me an extra excuse to play this song. Sure some might call it a downer on this the day of our Independence. But for those of you stuck at work, stuck studying (like me), stuck in an over sized / annoying crowd, or stuck by yourself, then curl on up to this song.

July flame, I'm seeing fireworks, they're so beautiful, tell me why it hurts

Artist- Laura Veirs
Song of the day- July Flame

To start July off right, here's a little moody music. It reminds me of playing guitar while the bonfire burns out, driving along the PCH after midnight, and sneaking to the boys' cabin after lights out at camp...ok maybe I didn't ever do the last part but for coolness sake let's pretend I did. Here's to the anticipation of a great summer and the continued probability of me slacking off in summer school.

It's sixteen miles to the promise land and I promise you I'm doing the best I can

Artist- Rilo Kiley
Song of the day- With Arms Outstretched

How could I not start a song of the day blog without starting with Rilo Kiley? This song has been playing in my head all day. If you're like me you've been itching for the holiday of outside activities and BBQ-in to get here quick. And if your week was anything like mine where the crap keeps rising and you're doing the best you can to make it back to the good times, this song is for you!
