Song of the day- I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
One of my favorite holiday traditions of old is Aimee Mann's Christmas show after she started them almost a decade ago. It's been several years since she had one but tonight I get to enjoy her sarcastic fantastic self doing Christmas the only way she can. Though today's song is not on her Christmas album, it is one of my favs and she often still plays it for her holiday show. Though it can be argued that a song about an addict making life goals doesn't scream happy holidays, Everyone needs a Christmas song, and it's pretty catchy. So for all of us cleaning up, setting goals, or helping others get to the best Christmas possible, this one's for you!
I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
And then, baby, I'm through
Four more weeks that couldn't make any difference
Except maybe to you
But I've tried to use that trick
Like a carrot on a stick
So I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
Then, baby, I'm through
I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
And then, baby, I'm done
One less fucker trying to get in the business
Of the prodigal son
Where I know I can't compete
Once I'm off of Hastings Street
So I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
Then, baby, I'm done
'Cause I can't live loaded and I can't live sober
And I've been this way since the end of October
And I know enough to know
That, baby, when it's over, it's over
And it's over
'Cause, baby, I'm done
I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
And then call it a day
Tell you I'm sorry that I made you a witness
To my moral decay
And that, once upon a time
I believed it was a victimless crime
I was thinking I could clean up for Christmas
Then call it a day
Then call it a day
Then call it a day

Salvation's coming cheap today
Artist- Aimee Mann
Song of the day- Calling on Mary
One of my favorite Christmas traditions was with my sister in California. We would start off the holiday season with Aimee Mann and her christmas show cuz there is nothing I enjoy more than a good hollywood hipster christmas. Sadly Mann stopped doing christmas concerts but her holiday album still gets me in the hipster holiday mood. So here's to you cool cats out there. Just remember know one is too cool for christmas, cuz if so Aimee Mann would be.
I heard the sidewalk Santa say:
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Salvation's coming cheap today
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
I searched the skyline for a star
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
And baby I wondered where you are
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
'Cause comfort's not possible when
You look past the joy to the end
Calling on Mary is voluntary
Unless you're alone like me
If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree
When I was young I couldn't see
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
All that my true love gave to me
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
She offered sight to the blind
But I'm not the miracle kind
Calling on Mary is voluntary
Unless you're alone like me
If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree
And to all the lost souls down below:
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
What's one more drifter in the snow?
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
If there's a star above, then it can look like love
When they light up the Christmas tree
If there's a star above, then it can look like love

You look like A perfect fit For a girl in need Of a tourniquet
Artist- Aimee Mann
Song of the day- Save Me
One of my sister's all time favs became mine as well after seeing P.T. Anderson's film Magnolia. And if you have 3 hours to spare in your life I think it is possible you might hate the film but will fall in love with this songwriter who Anderson uses brilliantly throughout this film about the relationships of victims and villains, with an uncanny ability to humanize both. Though I still don't understand the raining frogs aspect, the acting alone still makes this film one of my favs. Mann received an Oscar nomination for this song and after hearing it, I've loved everything she's ever done before and since and can't wait to see her again tonight for what I think is my 5th or 6th time...though my sis is still beating me. This song in particular mixes that unspoken desperation I think we all look for in any kind of relationship. To not just be loved but saved from ourselves, from loneliness, from those who'd rather judge than get to know us. And in the context of the film I think it's interesting that this concept doesn't exclude anyone, not even the cruelest of people, the drug addicts, those with a past, that a** hole on tv, even Tom Cruise, we all are looking for someone or something to save us. If you're on the hunt today know you aren't alone, we were all meant to be saved.

You look like
A perfect fit
For a girl in need
Of a tourniquet
But can you, save me
Come on and, save me
If you could, save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
'Cause I can tell
You know what it's like
The long farewell
Of the hunger strike
But can you, save me
Come on and, save me
If you could, save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
You struck me down
Like Radium
Like Peter Pan or Superman
You will come to save me
C'mon and save me
If you could, save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
'Cept the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
But the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
C'mon and save me
Why don't you save me
If you could save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
'Cept the freaks
Except the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
Except the freaks who could never love anyone

She's got the river down which I sold her

Song of the Day- 4th of July
Almost more than looking forward to celebrating freedom, fireworks, and the American way, I especially love today because it gives me an extra excuse to play this song. Sure some might call it a downer on this the day of our Independence. But for those of you stuck at work, stuck studying (like me), stuck in an over sized / annoying crowd, or stuck by yourself, then curl on up to this song.
