I'm thinking 'bout who I want, and I won't let go

Artist - Emily King
Song of the Day - Can't Hold Me

I first discovered today’s artist while following one of my
fav dancers, Nicholas Palmquist, teaching choreography to one of King’s songs….and
before you ask of course I don’t take dance classes. Like any normal person I follow
a bunch of ballet dancer boys on Instagram and live out my “Center Stage”
dreams. Speaking of, one of my other fav dancers, Robbie Fairchild, has been
performing much of King’s catalog on New York rooftops during this isolation
which makes me so happy and also made me realize that King’s entire catalog is
glorious and if you need a dancy pick me up take the time to listen through it.

Today’s song seemed appropriate since it’s discovering what
you can do for yourself better than anyone…. sure it might be implying
something specifically (insert blush here). But whatever you may be figuring
out about yourself or dancing on empty rooftops through, this one’s for you.

In the night, in the middle of the day
I call you over, but you always hesitate
Used to tell me, "You should leave it up to fate."
Now I that I never have to wait
Close my eyes, let down my hair
I'm thinking 'bout what I want, gonna take me there
Turn the dial on the stereo
I'm thinking 'bout who I want, and I won't let go
You can't hold me down, only I can do that
You can't hold me down, only I can do that
You can't hold me down, only I can do that
You can't hold me down, hold me down
In a T-shirt, in my satin lingerie
A little lower, little higher, change pace
Used to wait here, but you'd always be too late
Now I can go here, and I never have to fake
Close my eyes, let down my hair
I'm thinking 'bout what I want, gonna take me there
Turn the dial on the stereo
I'm thinking 'bout who I want, and I won't let go
You can't hold me down, only I can do that
You can't hold me down, only I can do that
You can't hold me down, only I can do that
You can't hold me down, hold me down
A-ya-oh-wa-oh-oh
A-ya-oh-wa, ooh ooh, you can't hold me!
A-ya-oh-wa-oh-oh
A-ya-oh-wa, ooh ooh, you can't hold me!
Thought you were my only love
But I found someone with the perfect touch
And ooh-wa, you can't hold me
I don't want to waste your time
Got a secret and it's mine all mine
Ooh-wa, you can't hold me
I used to have to wait around
Stay home, baby, I can hold it down
Ooh-wa, you can't hold me
Now I don't have to look no more
I'm the one that I've been waiting for
Ooh-wa, you can't hold me
A-ya-oh-wa-oh-oh
A-ya-oh-wa, ooh ooh, you can't hold me!
A-ya-oh-wa-oh-oh
A-ya-oh-wa, ooh ooh, you can't hold me!
A-ya-oh-wa-oh-oh
A-ya-oh-wa, ooh ooh, you can't hold me!
A-ya-oh-wa-oh-oh
A-ya-oh-wa, ooh ooh, you can't hold me!

Oh, I had a feeling this day would come and leave me reeling I just want to run back in your arms again But they're no longer there To hold me safe inside, to hold me anywhere

Artist - Sara Bareilles
Song of the Day - If I Can't Have You

I've had to put this most excellent album on the shelf for a while, after being
traumatized by one of the worst concert experiences of my many concert going
life. It had nothing to do with the artist and everything to do with my friend and
I being forced to carry a passed out teen as her intoxicated boyfriend yelled
at us...calm down youths it's a Sara Bareilles show! I digress, cuz I'm
obsessed with most of what Bareilles creates anyway, but this song somehow snuck
its way back to my headphones and can't be stopped.

Perhaps it's that Bareilles and Emily King wrote this love song about Obama
leaving office that I can relate to or how my bread and butter is a sad song disguised
as a happy one. But it’s feeling very poignant as I selfishly dwell on all the
things I can’t have right now. Trips, friends, Broadway productions that quite
literally sustain my soul. My family that feels so much farther away than usual.
And yes, the greater good is what matters right now. Trust me, nurse,
appreciate it. I’m allowing us 4:14 minutes to mourn what we are giving up and
maybe learning to appreciate what we had and what we will get to have again. So
for all of you missing your Broadways or Obamas or whatever it might be, this
one’s for you.

You tell me that you're leavin'
You say that time will slow the bleedin'
Of this heart that I've placed into your hands
I held it out to you
Now you give it back, what am I supposed to do?
Oh, I had a feeling this day would come and leave me reeling
I just want to run back in your arms again
But they're no longer there
To hold me safe inside, to hold me anywhere
Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you at all
I miss you every morning and in the evening rain
Tonight, it's pouring, and I'm alone again
I count the seconds (count the seconds) between the thoughts of you
I'm getting better, baby, I'm almost up to two
Oh, you had your reasons and I know
Some folks are seasons, they got to come and go
But I'm still tender (I'm still tender), I miss the summertime
When I could feel your love and I could still feel mine
Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you
You gave me everything that I will need to walk this long road
(Show me the way to get back)
Gave me a sense of pride that I will carry with me
All the way back home
Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you at all
I'm thankful that I held you
(I'm thankful that I held you)
I'm thankful that I held you
I'm thankful that I held you, held you, held you
(I'm thankful that I held you)
I'm, I'm, I'm (thankful that I held you)
(I'm thankful that I held you) yeah
(I'm thankful that I held you)
