Don't fake it baby, lay the real thing on me

Artist - David Bowie
Song of the day - Moonage Daydream

My last concert before the apocalypse was luckily the punk rock art house
god himself, John Cameron Mitchell aka Hedwig and the Angry Inch aka THE rock
opera all others are measured by. And though I was losing my mind hearing the OG
sing his musical hits, it was his Bowie cover of today’s song that stuck with
me…. Also perhaps cuz he performed an uncomfortable yet still genius version of
it on Shrill. I always enjoyed the song but like a lot of great covers, you’re
forced to hear it with fresh ears and see it in a different light.

I couldn’t begin to deconstruct this wacked out tune at the height of Ziggy
Stardust fame, it’s simply that it makes me happy. Through the space invader,
ray gun and alligator imagery is plea to bring in it on, lay it on me, whatever
you got I’m ready for it and I want it. And there’s this weird vibe right now
especially in my ER that something’s coming it’s not quite here yet but we’re
in this strange eye of the hurricane where the shadows of what will hit is trickling
down but the storm is just a few miles off. And there’s a Ziggy Stardust part
of me that just wants to paint a lightning bolt on my face, put on a kimono onesie
and be like “no I’m the mama-papa coming for you!...also keep your mouth shut.”
So for all my fellow space invaders, this one’s for you.

I'm an alligator, I'm a mama-papa coming for you
I'm the space invader, I'll be a rock 'n' rollin' bitch for you
Keep your mouth shut, you're squawking like a pink monkey bird
And I'm busting up my brains for the words
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Don't fake it baby, lay the real thing on me
The church of man, love, is such a holy place to be
Make me baby, make me know you really care
Make me jump into the air
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Keep your 'lectric eye on me babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream oh yeah
Freak out, far out, in out

Oh she may be weary Them young girls they do get wearied

Artist - Otis Redding
Song of the day - Try a little Tenderness

I think most of us are running on shorter fuses than usual.
We’re stressed, we’re scared, we’re kind of helpless to an extent knowing we
still have such a long way to still go. The word weary came to mind and then
this song did as well.

Being a child of the 80’s the “Pretty in Pink” Duckie
version of this song impregnated my mind and forever gave me a love for quirky
boys, record stores and Otis Redding…maybe not in that order. And I just love
how this song starts off so tender and then by the end it’s like dance shouting
an anthem, pleading for tenderness, and I was like yep that’s exactly how I
feel right now.

And I love this live taping of the song that Redding comes
out for like three encores mid song that’s just basically pleading “got ta got
ta got ta” and the crowd is losing their minds over it. They feel it and they
want that feeling so badly. I think we’re at the same kind of tipping point.
And hopefully it’s tipping more towards tender than frantic. So if you’re in
need for some dance shouting or just a little tenderness, this one’s for you.
-->

Oh she may be weary
Them young girls they do get wearied
Wearing that same old shaggy dress, yeah, yeah
But when she gets weary
Try a little tenderness, yeah, yeah
You know she's waiting
Just anticipating
The thing that you'll never, never, never, never possess, yeah, yeah
But while she's there waiting
Without them try a little tenderness
That's all you got to do
It's not just sentimental no, no, no
She has her grief and care, yeah, yeah, yeah
But the soft words they are spoke so gentle, yeah
It makes it easier, easier to bear, yeah
You won't regret it no, no
Young girls they don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness, yeah, yeah, yeah
But it's all so easy
All you got to do is try
Try a little tenderness
Yeah
All you got to do is, man, hold her when you wanna
Squeeze her, don't tease her, never leave her
Get to her, got, got, got to try a little tenderness, yeah, yeah
You got to know how to love her, man
Don't be surprised, man
You got to squeeze her, don't tease her, never leave
You got to hold her, brother, something, man
Try a little tenderness, yeah, yeah, yeah
You got to grab her gently, man
Don't bruise her, no, no
You got to love her, tease her, don't squeeze her
You got to try, na na na na na
Try, try a little tenderness, yeah
Watch her groove
You got to know what to do, man
Take this advice
You gotta love, squeeze, don't tease

You want to see my spirit dissipate You want my body to disintegrate But I refuse to just wither away I won't succumb to this decay

Artist - Akenya
Song of the day - Decay

I’m gonna really attempt to avoid venting about being a nurse during this time of pandemic right now and will perhaps let today’s song express my frustrations. I mean feel free to keep commending healthcare workers for being on the frontlines and taking care of the sick and exposed, but also maybe write or complain or advocate for us to whoever is not letting us be tested, not making sure we have supplies to protect us and our patients, or just Amazon us some mask, gowns and bleach wipes. I mean I get it, I want to save celebrities and hot people too, but there might not be anyone to take of them if the frontline is gone.

So maybe I lied about ranting. But today’s song is about Akenya’s own frustration concerning her shitty lyme disease diagnosis. And used the song to raise money for its cause. So for those of you feeling beat down by whatever might be going on, I mean take your pick right now, this one’s for you. And just like Akenya refuses to whither away, may our spirits never dissipate.

Verse 1: You keep my feet high above my head
And my spine is tucked between my knees
I thought I would only know decay when I was dead
You make wilting something of ease

Pre-Chorus: I never wanted to be twisted up like this
I think my body might get sick enough and quit
I never wanted to be twisted up amidst all the prey that you claim for the taking

Chorus: You wanna defeat me
You’re trying to play me
(Got me) acting like I’m crazy
But frankly
I don’t want to be around this
I don’t want to stand for your bullshit
My energy isn’t feeling you, you’re not healing me you just
Wanna defeat me
You’re trying to play me
(Got me) acting like I’m crazy
But frankly
I don’t want to be around this
I don’t want to stand for you
My enemy, I keep fighting but you keep killing me, you just

Verse 2: Turn my insides outside one by one
Dim the bright side of my attitude
Shatter any matter of the woman I’d become
Take my breaking bones as gratitude

Pre-Chorus 2: I never thought I would be twisted up like this
But I know my spirit hasn’t given up so I persist
And resist the urge to sit and reminisce
Of the days when you lay unawakened

(Chorus)

Bridge: You want to see my spirit dissipate
You want my body to disintegrate
But I refuse to just wither away
I won't succumb to this decay

(Pre-Chorus, Chorus, and Outro simultaneously)
Outro: You want to make
Me decay, but I won't, I won't
And you want to break
Down my faith, but you won't, you won't!

Last line of final chorus: My enemy, I'll keep fighting 'til you stop killing me

Everything is falling apart Slipping away No way to fight it

Artist- Lennon Stella
Song of the day - Breakaway

So it seems daily, just when you're getting grips on a new way of life, as they do in crisis, things keep changing and in our cases more lock downs, more restrictions, more isolation all for the greater good are taking place. And if you're at all a like me, who i thought was pretty chill, but finding it a bit or a lot harder to keep a level head when the world seems to be slipping through your fingers, today's song seems pretty relatable.

With a name like Lennon Stella you are almost required to be the coolest most musically talented in the room and fortunately for all of us she seems to be wearing the name well. (Though I'm still not over her being the sweet shy girl from the Nashville TV show, voice forever like a friggin angel). Sure I miss country harmonies but really Lennon Stella sing whatever you want, I am here for it. And luckily, she love's writing darker songs to a club beat that makes me miss by drum kit and an ability to play a drum kit well.

So here's to those of us scrambling to keep it together as things fall apart, maybe it's time to just let it breakaway. This one's for you.

I apologize my emotions are higher
Hard to explain when you feel your world's on fire
Close my eyes to all the things that hurt my nature
I apologize but I am
I'm tired of holding my head up
I'm tired of trying to hold onto you
This cycle, fighting and making up
I'm tired of trying to hold on
Everything is falling apart
Slipping away
There's no rewinding the things we say
Everything is falling apart
Slipping away
No way to fight it
I'll break, breakaway
Break, breakaway
I'll break, breakaway
Break, breakaway
I'll break
The ground and the ceiling seem to be disappearing
Nothing to stand on, oh God I hate this feeling
You put the weight of your world down on my shoulders
Why'd you have to make me older
Make me older, make me older
I'm tired of holding my head up
I'm tired of trying to hold onto you
This cycle, fighting and making up
I'm tired of trying to hold on
Everything is falling apart
Slipping away
There's no rewinding the things we say
Everything is falling apart
Slipping away
No way to fight it
I'll break, breakaway
Break, breakaway
I'll break, breakaway
Break, breakaway
Everything is falling apart
Slipping away
There's no rewinding the things we say
Everything is falling apart
Slipping away
No way to fight it
I'll break, breakaway
Break, breakaway
I'll break, breakaway
Break, breakaway

Oh, I had a feeling this day would come and leave me reeling I just want to run back in your arms again But they're no longer there To hold me safe inside, to hold me anywhere

Artist - Sara Bareilles
Song of the Day - If I Can't Have You

I've had to put this most excellent album on the shelf for a while, after being
traumatized by one of the worst concert experiences of my many concert going
life. It had nothing to do with the artist and everything to do with my friend and
I being forced to carry a passed out teen as her intoxicated boyfriend yelled
at us...calm down youths it's a Sara Bareilles show! I digress, cuz I'm
obsessed with most of what Bareilles creates anyway, but this song somehow snuck
its way back to my headphones and can't be stopped.

Perhaps it's that Bareilles and Emily King wrote this love song about Obama
leaving office that I can relate to or how my bread and butter is a sad song disguised
as a happy one. But it’s feeling very poignant as I selfishly dwell on all the
things I can’t have right now. Trips, friends, Broadway productions that quite
literally sustain my soul. My family that feels so much farther away than usual.
And yes, the greater good is what matters right now. Trust me, nurse,
appreciate it. I’m allowing us 4:14 minutes to mourn what we are giving up and
maybe learning to appreciate what we had and what we will get to have again. So
for all of you missing your Broadways or Obamas or whatever it might be, this
one’s for you.

You tell me that you're leavin'
You say that time will slow the bleedin'
Of this heart that I've placed into your hands
I held it out to you
Now you give it back, what am I supposed to do?
Oh, I had a feeling this day would come and leave me reeling
I just want to run back in your arms again
But they're no longer there
To hold me safe inside, to hold me anywhere
Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you at all
I miss you every morning and in the evening rain
Tonight, it's pouring, and I'm alone again
I count the seconds (count the seconds) between the thoughts of you
I'm getting better, baby, I'm almost up to two
Oh, you had your reasons and I know
Some folks are seasons, they got to come and go
But I'm still tender (I'm still tender), I miss the summertime
When I could feel your love and I could still feel mine
Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you
You gave me everything that I will need to walk this long road
(Show me the way to get back)
Gave me a sense of pride that I will carry with me
All the way back home
Ooh, if I can't have you
Then I have to find a way to get through
Though I don't want to
I have to do my best to recall
That I'm thankful that I held you at all
I'm thankful that I held you
(I'm thankful that I held you)
I'm thankful that I held you
I'm thankful that I held you, held you, held you
(I'm thankful that I held you)
I'm, I'm, I'm (thankful that I held you)
(I'm thankful that I held you) yeah
(I'm thankful that I held you)

I promise you we won't be like the others We won't go running for cover

Artist of the day - Ben Platt
Song of the day - Rain

Since the world might be ending or feels that way...and we are all
(hopefully) trapped in our homes for a bit, I thought it might be the perfect
time for my psychological well being to bring back an old past time of mine as
we wait to see what the future holds. What better way to count these days of
"self distancing" than by song? And since when I'm not alone with my
thoughts I'm (crosses fingers, masked) in an ER face deep in possible Covid, I
need something to take my mind away from the pandemic. So let's see what the
soundtrack to a viral outbreak might sound like.

Today's song I really became obsessed with specifically by the video...more
specifically by Ben Platt's absurd solo dancing that I can't get enough
of.  Here I thought I only wanted Platt singing to me on a Broadway stage
through buckets of tears and spit as we both uncontrollably cried in public for
2.5 hrs    (see Dear Evan Hansen).

But right now, something about the video and song speaks to this thing
inside of us that is in the middle of all this despair but can still choose to
be hopeful. And sure maybe we need to dance solo at a gas station to get
there. So here's to the broken yet still hopeful and open and solo dancers, this one's for you.

You say you've been through this before
You gave away all your secrets
To someone who up and left you in pieces
I know the feeling, believe me

I know the prices you've gotta pay
I'm sacrificing my freedom
And all just to get somebody to see me
Nobody said it was easy

My heart's been broken and broken and broken and broken
But I keep, keep on hoping and hoping and hoping and hoping
That if it keeps on breaking and breaking and breaking and breaking
Them one day it'll open and open and open and open and open for you

Hey!
I know we've both been afraid
But we can't run from the wind and the thunder
When we're dancing under the rain, the rain, the rain
Hey!
I know we got what it takes
Ain't gonna run from the wind and the thunder
When we're dancing under the rain, the rain, the rain
We're dancing under the rain

Breathe deep, let it wash over you
We're slowly becoming lovers
I promise you we won't be like the others
We won't go running for cover

My heart is broken and broken and broken and broken
But I keep, keep on hoping and hoping and hoping and hoping
That if it keeps on breaking and breaking and breaking and breaking
Then one day it'll open and open and open and open and open for you

Hey!
I know we've both been afraid
But we can't run from the wind and the thunder
When we're dancing under the rain, the rain, the rain
Hey!
I know we got what it takes
Ain't gonna run from the wind and the thunder
When we're dancing under the rain, the rain, the rain
We're dancing under the rain

Broken and broken and broken and broken (we're dancing under the rain)
But I keep, keep on hoping and hoping and hoping and hoping (dancing under the rain)
That if it keeps on breaking and breaking and breaking and breaking
Then one day it'll open and open and open and open and open for you (oh)

Hey!
I know we've both been afraid
But we can't run from the wind and the thunder
When we're dancing under the rain, the rain, the rain
Hey!
I know we got what it takes
Ain't gonna run from the wind and the thunder
When we're dancing under the rain, the rain, the rain
We're dancing under the rain

You and I have history or don't you remember?

Artist of the day- Glee cast
Song of the day- Rumor Has it / Someone Like you

My passion for today's show started let's just say obsessive as it did for many people and though my love and viewing melted away through the years, as it begins it's final season tonight I am reminded why it was such a big deal for not only music and musical geeks but outcasts around the globe. Not fitting in and having melodic emotions were perhaps even cool or accepted or at least taught some how to accept themselves...And they figured out how to crack the music code in prime time which has never really been done successfully long term. So kudos to Glee, through the fictitious and real highs and lows, popular to unpopular to tragedy and to the underdog, this one's for you and your ability to make me like mash ups.

She, she ain't real
She ain't gon' be able to love you like I will
She is a stranger
You and I have history or don't you remember?
Sure, she's got it all but baby is that really what you want?
Bless your soul, you got your head in the clouds
She made a fool out of you and, boy, she's bringing you down
She made your heart melt but you're cold to the core
Now rumour has it, she ain't got your love anymore
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
She is half your age
But I'm guessing that's the reason that you've stayed
I heard you've been missing me
You've been telling people things you shouldn't be
Like when we creep out, and she ain't around
Haven't you heard the rumours?
Bless your soul, you got your head in the clouds
You made a fool out of me and, boy, you're bringing me down
You made my heart melt yet I'm cold to the core
But rumour has it I'm the one you're leaving her for
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
All of these words whispered in my ear
Tell a story that I cannot bear to hear
Just 'cause I said it, doesn't mean that I meant it
People say crazy things
Just 'cause I said it, don't mean that I meant it
Just 'cause you heard it
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
(Rumour)
Rumour has it
But rumor has it he's the one I'm leaving you for

I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me, it isn't over
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me, it isn't over
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead, yeah
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don't forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
