Today was quite stressful and exhausting and I'm pretty sure I didn't know what I was doing half the time. I spent hours in coping groups, attempting to lead coping groups, observing patients, attempting to talk to patients, and kicking butt at jenga. I felt completely frazzled but couldn't get over what I kept seeing and experiencing. People looking out for each other, taking care of each other. Patients physically helping other patients do what they couldn't do on their own, supporting, reassuring, complimenting each other and even us. These people in the middle of crisis, some at the hardest points in their life, still taking time to care for each other. I saw it in staff, in my fellow students, in my co-leaders, if we stumbled we help each other out, we'd ease the awkwardness or aggression, we'd be there for each other even if we didn't have the answers. "Togetherness" as a patient said today, and I might have to agree. My safe place is when it's not you against the world but you and people standing by your side when you might just be able to conquer anything, even the worst of times life has to offer. But today's song goes out to my friend Kelly who has the ability to reply to almost anything I say with a song lyric and therefore got this song stuck in my head today. Just being there for people, on the phone, side by side, or driving miles away to do it, you being there will make all the difference.
